This week's health tip: The Danger of New Dr-ugs
Today's Tip is about using new dr-ugs. Sorry for the misspelling but if we spell the word correctly it will not get through the spam filters. I did general practice / internal medicine for a some time back in the early 1970's. I remember the dr-ug salesman coming to my office and introducing the latest antibiotic, Cleocin. I had several occasions where I thought about using it, but decided not to, since this was a "new and untested" dr-ug. It wasn't but a few years later that Cleocin had caused several cases of intractable diarrhea that resulted in less than optimal outcomes. As Woody Allen says "My doctor told me that death would be very bad for my ulcer."As an aside, today's dr-ug salesmen are no longer sales"men" but they are very attractive and young sales"women." It would not be unusual these days to attend an "educational" program put on by a dr-ug company and find five hundred dollar bills under your plate at lunch. How times have changed!
Dr. Mericle's Health Tip This Week:
Don't take any new dr-ug until it isn't new anymore ... ie wait at least five years.
No matter how much a new product is tested it will not be as thoroughly tested before it is released as it will be five years after its release. Unless there is no other dr-ug that would work or perhaps, save your life, don't take any new dr-ugs. When the ad on your Sunday television says: "Ask your doctor about the latest new dr-ug -just say no, I won't ask him until about five years from now.
